A long bill, greenish-blue feathers on its head and on the upper part, rust brown feathers underneath: The beauty of the kingfisher, Eisvogel, is simply unique. In the Radegast Valley near Rehna, you might be fortunate to watch this rare bird fishing.

Rehna is a good starting point for a bicycle trip through the wonderful countryside of the nature reserve, "Biosphärenreservat Schaalsee". In the Radegast valley kingfishers dive head first into the water, and high above the Schaalsee sea eagles draw their circles. With its old half-timbered houses and the medieval monastery, Rehna is a beautiful town in western Mecklenburg.
The town of Rehna is situated where the most important road connection of those times between the Hanseatic city
Lübeck and the residence of the prince of Schwerin crossed the little river Radegast. Already in the year 1100, German
settlers began to occupy the region, which was originally Wendish. Between 1230 and 1236 a Premonstratensian convent
was founded in the church village Rehna. The convent, which belonged to the Ratzeburg Bishopric, experienced the peak
of its development in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was closed in 1552.
The Long House, a part of the former convent, was largely restored in 1997. In 2004 a convent garden, which is unique
for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, was opened. More than 3,500 different plants grow here on approximately 300 square metres,
among others the very rare Inula helenium.
