Röbel

Historical facts

A Slavic fortress of the 10th century represents the origin of Röbel. In 1236 Heinrich Borwin II, a great-grandson of the Obotrite Prince Niklot, assigned Röbel the status of a town. Beside the old town, Nicolaus von Werle founded a new town in 1261. The separation of those two parts of the town was strictly observed until the late 18th century.

Altröbel - the old town - belonged to the Schwerin bishopric. Above all, farmers and fishermen settled around the Marienkirche erected in 1250.

Neuröbel - the new town -, predominantly hosting craftsmen and merchants, was assigned to the Havelberg Bishopric. A church ? the Nikolaikirche ? was also built in the prosperous town Neuröbel. It was inaugurated in 1275.

During the first half of the 19th century, the city harbour was built. Röbel gained great significance as a transshipment centre. Today the harbour serves passenger traffic.

From 1952 until 1994 Röbel was an administrative centre. Since the 1960s tourism has become increasingly important for the town's economic development. With its half-timbered houses and its charming location along the Müritz, Röbel is always worth a visit.
