"Hühnergötter" - "Chicken Gods" is the name given to stones that have natural holes. On the coast near Sassnitz you can find many of these.

Searching for these special stones can easily be combined with a hike up to the Königsstuhl (King's Throne). Diving, cycling or deep-sea fishing: In Sassnitz you can spend a real active holiday. Or what about going for a short sail to the Danish island of Bornholm? Do you prefer taking it easy on your holiday? Then why don't you simply lie down on the beach or sit on the pier: an ideal spot to watch the incoming and outgoing ships. Do you like fish? You can get some at the old city harbour - directly from the fisherman.
Present day Sassnitz resulted from the merger of the fishing villages Crampas und Sassnitz in 1906. However,
Sassnitz was not conferred the status of a town until 1957. In the 19th century Sassnitz developed into a well-known
seaside resort. Theodor Fontane was a guest here as well as the composer Johannes Brahms.
In 1909 the train ferry to Sweden was put into operation. The Sassnitz harbour has always been an essential economic
factor for the town.
The industrial development of Sassnitz began after the Second World War. Fishing and fish processing as well as the
processing of chalk have been particularly significant.
