When first mentioned in 1219, Schönberg was merely a village of twelve farms. In 1320 the bishops of Ratzeburg erected a castle surrounded by moats. In the times to follow craftsmen and servants settled around the bishops? residence and made Schöneberg the centre of economic activities in the region of Ratzeburg. The castle existed until 1805.
In the course of the Thirty Years' War the village was surrendered to Mecklenburg. After the division of the country in 1701, Schönberg became an exclave and was ceded to the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a special status the Revolution of 1918/19 put an end to.
The times of unrest finally yielded to an economic upturn in the 19th century: In 1822 Schönberg was granted town status, which paved the way for ensuing economic growth.
Schönberg came through World War II without suffering great losses; however, due to its proximity to the restricted zone at the internal German border, the town?s development stagnated in the post-war period. Today, Schönberg benefits from this location, as it is conveniently located between Lübeck and Schwerin with easy access to the A 20 motorway.
