The large thatched roof of the historical farm, the Bechelsdorfer Schulzenhaus, in Schönberg almost reaches down to the ground. This is why you enter the Low German hall house through a high gate on the gable end of the building. Historical houses of this type served several purposes: they were used as housing, garage, workshop, stables and storeroom at the same time.

Magnificent half-timbered houses, classicistic façades and a Gothic brick church: In Schönberg you will find everything a typical small town in Mecklenburg has to offer. Approaching the municipal church, the Stadtkirche, you may hear unusual music resounding through its brick walls: the programme of the Schöneberger Summer Music Festival also includes unconventional works. When first mentioned in 1219, Schönberg was merely a village of twelve farms. In 1320 the bishops of Ratzeburg erected a castle surrounded by moats. In the times to follow craftsmen and servants settled around the bishops? residence and made Schöneberg the centre of economic activities in the region of Ratzeburg...
