Sternberg

Historical facts

Likely already around the year 700 Slavs settled where Sternberg lies. The open-air museum Groß Raden acquaints visitors with their way of living. In 1248 Sternberg was granted the status of a town.

The Middle-Age history of Sternberg was clouded over by a terrible incident. Twenty-seven Jewish citizens of Sternberg were burnt at the stake in 1492 for alleged desecration of the host.

From the 16th century until the early 20th century the provincial diets met regularly in Sternberg. Already in 1546 just a few kilometres away on the Sagsdorf Warnow Bridge, the diet decided to introduce the Reformation in Mecklenburg.

In 1741 a fire destroyed a large part of the town centre. On the market square the half-timbered houses dating from the reconstruction of the town in the 18th century can be visited.

Since 1997 Sternberg has been a "certified resort", located on a lake bearing the same name.
