Out there at sea you wouldn't like to look into its gigantic eyes; here in the German Maritime Museum, the Deutsches Meeresmuseum, you can enjoy seeing it: the giant squid. In the past giant squid belonged to the realm of mythical creatures, but since January 2005 you can admire a six-metre-long specimen in the museum.

Stralsund's striking silhouette is truly impressive from afar, in particular, as you approach the city from the lake side along the Strelasund. The large churches St. Marien and St. Nikolai are, in fact, predominant in the townscape, but in the old town centre you will discover a good deal more. Since 2002 the old town centre of Stralsund, as well as that of Wismar, have belonged to the UNESCO world cultural heritage.
At the beginning of the 13th century German merchants settled near the Slavic village Stralow, which was conveniently situated for public transport with its natural harbour and a passage to Rügen. Since the Stralsund merchants were members of the Hanseatic League, the Hanse, Stralsund developed into a prosperous town during the 13th and 14th centuries.
