The name of the town refers to its early Slavic origins, as do many place names in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. "Tribsees" is derived from the Slavic word for "clearing".
Cruising on the rivers Recknitz and Trebel or travelling the roads: No matter which way you take to Tribsees, you will spot the massive steeple of the municipal church already from a distance. When rambling through the Recknitz Valley or the Trebel Lowlands, you will discover the variety of the landscape. Do you like to eat fish you have caught yourself? There are calm spots along both rivers, waiting for you to cast your fishing line.
In 1285 the settlement of Tribsees was granted town status. In the course of the centuries, the ruling power changed
frequently: At the end of the Middle Ages the sovereigns of Mecklenburg and Pomerania fought over Tribsees, later it
was occupied by the Swedes, the French and the Prussians.
Since its admission to the support programme for urban development in 1992, the old town of Tribsees has been
extensively redeveloped.
