In 1252 Wesenberg was founded by Nikolaus von Werle. The layout of the town and the grid of the streets have provided evidence until today that the settlers followed a precise design when building the town.
Under the protection of the fortress built in the 13th century, whose donjon is still partially intact today, Wesenberg developed into a relatively prosperous residence of land-cultivating townsmen.
But there were also repeated setbacks. The plague raged in Wesenberg in the year 1350. Again and again large fires and warfare decimated the stock of historical buildings.
Handicraft and trade have remained important commercial branches for Wesenberg up to the 21st century.
Since 1990 the castle and the town have been redeveloped step by step.
