Wismar, Hanseatic city

approx. 44,400 inhabitants

On the coast of Poel Island a cog from the Hanseatic era was discovered in 1998. Today a copy of it is floating in the municipal harbour of Wismar and gives you an impression of the medieval art of shipbuilding. As soon as the cog is finished it will set sail with visitors.

"Alter Schwede" - in the centre of the city you will not only be astonished by the "Old Swede", the oldest house in Wismar, but also by the enchanting Wasserkunst and the monumental brick churches St. Nikolai and St. George. In the historical old town, belonging to the UNESCO world cultural heritage since 2002, just as the old town centre of Stralsund, you will discover the witnesses of the Hanseatic era and you might fall in love with the charms of this city by the sea. You cannot yet set sail on the cog, it is true, but there are other tourist boats which will be glad to take you on a tour.

Historical facts

Around the year 1200 craftsmen and merchants settled in today's old town centre. Wismar was mentioned in documents for the first time in 1229. In the same year the village was assigned the status of a town. Prince Johann von Mecklenburg transferred his residence to Wismar in 1257...
