The town hall was built by the renowned architect Gustav Adolf Demmler in the historism style.

Wittenburg is a typical Mecklenburg small town. An exception is, however, the prominent ring of linden and horse chestnut trees that surrounds the medieval town centre. A stroll along this avenue is certainly worthwhile.
As early as 1154 Wittenburg was mentioned in documents as a province belonging to the Earldom of Ratzeburg. After a
battle between the Lords of Ratzeburg and the Earl of Schwerin in 1201, Wittenburg fell to Schwerin. It is assumed that
the town was founded in 1226.
From 1282 until the middle of the 14th century Wittenburg was the capital of an earldom extending from the Elbe close
to Boizenburg to Crivitz. Wittenburg flourished, above all, because of the lively trade activities with Lübeck.
In the 19th century a new era began. The town expanded. Companies like the gas supply works and the dairy settled here.
The town hall of Wittenburg was erected in1852 according to the plans of the court architect of Schwerin Georg Adolf
Demmler. The construction of the railway line Hagenow-Neumünster in the year 1894 created the basis for the
establishment of more companies.
