Once a year the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offers a true highlight for cineastes: the Schwerin Film Art Festival.
The Film Art Festival was brought to life in 1990. Its intention is to make European films, which are on the other side of the mainstream, accessible to an interested audience. Hereby it focuses, above all, on films in the German language.
The series of events intends to contribute to discussion about issues of our times. Therefore lectures, concerts, exhibitions and round-table discussions complement the film presentations.
The annual cinema contest is an important event within the Film Art Festival. The best film strip is awarded the "Golden Ox". Since 2002 a "Flying Ox" has also been awarded. With this award the merits of prominent personalities or institutions specially committed to the national film culture are recognised. During recent years Mario Adorf, Goetz George and Senta Berger were among the award winners who personally received their "Oxen" in Schwerin.
