Surrounded by dreamy lakes and dense forests, Neustrelitz lies in the middle of the Lake District, the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte. Today, on a mild summer evening, you can listen to operetta melodies on the castle grounds where the dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz once strolled.
The Neustrelitz Castle Garden Festival is the largest operetta festival in Germany. But not only that: with idyllic paths under old trees, with its fountains and sculptures, the castle grounds of the former residence provide a unique background for the music event.
The festival took place for the first time in 2001. At that time "Queen Luise – Queen of Hearts" – was performed for the first time by the festival company in honour of Queen Luise of Prussia, a descendent of the House of Mecklenburg-Stelitz. Later "Im weißen Rössl" by Benatzky and "Die Csardasfürstin" (The Gipsy Princess) by Lehar followed.
Already today the Castle Garden Festival has secured itself a fixed place in the calendars of operetta enthusiasts. The unique stage, the cast of the Neustrelitz State Theatre and prominent soloists ensure an extraordinary cultural event year after year.
