Hiddensee, Island of

approx. 1,300 inhabitants

Iron horse or horse-drawn carriage: These are the alternatives you have to advance a little faster on Hiddensee. Private car traffic is not allowed on the island.

When you cycle through the environmentally protected landscape of Hiddensee, the wind may give you some trouble. On the other hand, it may make your way back easier - if it doesn't turn. The beautiful beach is not only tempting during the summer. Just visit Hiddensee in autumn, when the wind is blustering and the waves are breaking on the beach.

Historical facts

"Hidensey" was mentioned by name for the first time in historical writings of the 12th century. Archaeological findings prove that human beings lived on the island already during the Mesolithic Age and the Bronze Age. During the migration of peoples, the first Slavic settlements were established. In the 12th century the island was taken over by the Danes. In the year 1296 Cistercian monks founded a branch of the Neuenkamp monastery in the northern part of island, thereby laying the foundations for the village of Kloster.

People lived on farming and fishing until tourism started at the end of the 19th century. Then Hiddensee developed into a popular holiday resort for contemporary celebrities from culture, science and industry. Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud and Gerhart Hauptmann loved the special charms of the little island, which is still fascinating today in spite of the increasing number of visitors.
