The growth rates in the tourism sector have undergone a tremendous boom: Since 1993 the number of overnight stays has risen from 7.6 million to approximately 27.6 million; the number of beds has increased from 77,000 to 183,000. Meanwhile Mecklenburg-Vorpommern belongs to the most asked for holiday destinations in all of Germany. In the summer of 2003 for the very first time it became the most popular holiday state in the Republic of Germany.
