In its sixth legislative period Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is governed by a coalition of the SPD and the CDU. The coalition was formed as a result of the State Parliament election on 4th September 2011. The basis for the government’s work is a coalition agreement between the SPD and the CDU.

The Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is Erwin Sellering. He was elected to this office for the second time by Parliament on 25th October 2011. The Prime Minister is supported by the State Chancellery in the fulfilment of his functions.

In addition to the State Chancellery, there are eight ministries. The SPD leads five of these and the CDU three. The Minister-President and the Ministers of the altogether eight functional departments form the State Government. The Cabinet discusses political questions of principle and decides on the bills it proposes in Parliament. Its decisions are based upon a simple majority of the votes cast.
