Government and Administration

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is governed by a coalition of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Christian Democratic Party (CDU), which was formed as a result of the federal state parliament elections on 17th September 2006.

The Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is Erwin Sellering. Among the core competencies of the government leader are to form the government and to define the guidelines of regional state politics. Within these guidelines the state ministers are solely accountable for managing their own departments independently.

The State Government, the Prime Minister and the Ministers are the highest state authorities. Head state authorities who report to them directly are called State Offices. Within the framework of an extensive administrative reform Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is currently modernising its administrative system. Its main focus is to bundle regional authorities in order to organise administration more efficiently and in a more citizen-friendly way.
