Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has been upholding its interests through representation as a Land to the Federation in the federal capital of Berlin since 1999. The Under-Secretary for Federal Matters and the authorised representative of the Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the Federation is Dr. Thomas Freund.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern represents its political interests in the Federation through its participation in the Federal Council and its committees, where it, for example, influences the legislation and administration of the Federation as well as decisions pertaining to matters of the EU. The permanent Advisory Board - "Ständiger Beirat" is an important body of the Federal Council. It is made up of authorised representatives of the16 federal states and convenes weekly.
Another important task of the representation of the Land to the Federation in Berlin is to provide information about Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and to maintain contact with representatives from industry and commerce as well as politics and culture. Hence the representation of the Land to the Federation is an agency where contacts are made and opinions are formed and exchanged.
The building for the representation of the Land with its exceptional architecture is an attractive landmark. It was inaugurated in 2001 and is centrally located in the historically significant Ministry gardens. The building design and construction were assigned to the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partner (Hamburg) and to the landscape architects Krafft-Wehberg with Wes & Partner (Berlin).
