
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has an area of 23,189 square kilometres, which is populated by about 1.6 million people. Since 1990 the number of inhabitants has decreased by more than 245,000. With an average of 71 inhabitants per square kilometre, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is the most sparsely populated federal state of Germany.
Approximately 63 percent of the state's area is utilised for farming. Residential and traffic areas constitute almost eight percent. Forests cover one fifth and water covers approximately six percent of the state’s surface area.
Presently, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern consists of twelve administrative districts and six self-administrating towns. Its capital is Schwerin.
