The flag of the Land of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern presents itself in many colours: it is striped lengthwise ultramarine, white, yellow, white and vermilion.
The colours symbolize the unification of Mecklenburg and Vorpommern which form today’s state. Blue, red and yellow are the colours of Mecklenburg, whereas blue and white have been deemed officially as the colours of the Prussian province of Pomerania since 1882. The combination of the colours in the state flag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reminds furthermore of the blue, white and red of old sea flags of Mecklenburg and of the white and red of many Hanseatic cities.

Besides the state flag, the state authorities also use an official service flag. In addition to the colours, it shows the two heraldic animals of the federal state: the bull of Mecklenburg and the griffon of Pomerania. On official occasions the historic flags of the two parts of the state, Mecklenburg and Vorpommern, are also often flown.
