Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a young state. It was founded anew in 1990 and comprises the former GDR districts of Neubrandenburg, Rostock and Schwerin. Since 1994 it disposes of a state constitution. In the constitution important state objectives are defined and the fundamental features of the state organisation are outlined. The site of political decision-making is Parliament.
A history full of changes and a wealth of facets has marked our Land. Witnesses of our history are megalithic graves, brick churches or industrial memorials – attraction for great numbers of visitors in many places. The history of both parts of the state Mecklenburg and Vorpommern is also expressed in the design of the state symbol.
The surface area of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern covers more than 23,000 square kilometres. About 1.7 million people live here. Almost one quarter of them belong to the Christian church. The rich cultural heritage, the unique natural environment and the diversified cultural and recreational activities offered make this part of the country particularly attractive.
"MV tut gut" ("MV- a world of good") – is the slogan of the state marketing campaign. And the message is true: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is at the same time a holiday land and an attractive location for industry and science. The state has two universities rich in tradition in Rostock and Greifswald as well as five other institutions of higher learning. Along with traditional branches of industry such as the agriculture and food industry, the maritime industry or tourism, new branches are growing which form the state profile: Above all there is an innovative spirit and a founding aura reigning in the fields of life sciences, information technology and environmental technology. In addition Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is striving to become the "number one health state" in the Federal Republic of Germany.
